چکیده

Laboratory and flight test evaluations have consistently demonstrated the potential for helmet-mounted display (HMD) presented information to enhance air combat performance. The Air Force Research LaboratoryÕs (AFRLÕs) Helmet-Mounted Sight Plus (HMS+) program seeks to provide further enhancement by enabling the presentation of multi-color symbology and sensor imagery. To take proper advantage of color-capable HMDs, systematic evaluations must be conducted to identify the best color-coding techniques. The experiment described here is the second we have conducted to address this need. The first experiment identified the better of two competing color coding strategies for air-to-air weapons symbology and indicated that pilots preferred the color codes over an otherwise equivalent monochrome baseline. The present experiment compared the ÒwinningÓ color code to the monochrome baseline during trials of a complex multi-player air-to-air weapon delivery scenario. Twelve fighter pilots representing three different countries (U.S., U.K., and Sweden) flew simulator trials that included target identification, intercept, attack, missile launch, and defensive maneuvering tasks. ParticipantsÕ subjective feedback and performance data indicated a preference for color coded symbology.

Benefits of Color Coding Weapons Symbology for an Airborne Helmet-Mounted Display

We assessed the advantages of a color-coded weapons symbology for a helmet-mounted display over monochrome symbology by measuring military pilots' performance while they flew air-to-air combat in a simulator. The pilots fired missiles significantly sooner without sacrificing probability of kill when using the color-coded symbology, demonstrating a substantial practical benefit of color. Actual ...

Integration of a helmet-mounted display for helicopter operations in degraded visual environment: a human factors perspective

Helicopter operations in degraded visual environment (DVE), especially brownout/whiteout landings often result in severe incidents and accidents in the civil and military field. In fact, landing in desert environment is the most dangerous aspect of flying in combat helicopters according to the USAF. The integration of a helmet-mounted display (HMD) can help the pilot to maintain situation aware...

AFRL-HE-AZ-TP-2007-08 Visual suppression of monocularly presented symbology against a fused background in a simulation and training environment

When wearing a monocular head-mounted display (HMD), one eye views the HMD symbology while both eyes view an out-the-window scene. This may create interocular differences in image characteristics that could disrupt binocular vision by provoking visual suppression, thus reducing visibility of the background scene, monocular symbology, or both. However, binocular fusion of the background scene ma...

The Okcr and Pilot Performance during Transitions between Meteorological Conditions Using Hmd Attitude Symbology

Research has shown that spatial disorientation often occurs when pilots transition between real-world visual cues and head-down attitude instruments. Recent studies investigating the opto-kinetic cervical reflex (OKCR) indicate that when pilots transition between these two types of visual cues, they are also transitioning between frames of reference. Limited research has been conducted investig...

Afrl-he-az-tp-2007-06 Binocular Rivalry and Attention in Helmet-mounted Display Applications

As monocular head-mounted displays (HMDs) are introduced into existing flight simulators for training and mission rehearsal it will be important to determine whether binocular rivalry affects the visibility of HMD presented symbology or the out-the-window (OTW) flight simulator display imagery. In the present study, we examined whether rivalry suppression could be objectively measured under con...
